I often get asked about free things to do in Turks and Caicos. My answer is that there are some great activities in Turks and Caicos that are not fee. But, the BEST things to do in Turks and Caicos are free. The best free activity in Turks and Caicos is the beach. I mean, come on, most people come to Turks and Caicos for the beach and anything else you do while there are just extras.
Today I am giving you my favorite free things to do in Turks and Caicos. You can go to Turks and Caicos and have a great time and spend no extra money on some great activities.
Free Things to Do in Turks and Caicos
- Grace Bay Beach
- Paddle Boarding + Kayaking
- Snorkeling at Bights Reef
- A Day on Long Beach
- Island Fish Fry
Grace Bay Beach
I am going to start with my favorite thing about Turks and Caicos – Grace Bay Beach. Grace Bay Beach has been voted the world’s best beach on TripAdvisor and for good reasons. The water on Grace Bay Beach looks like glass. It is crystal clear and always the right temperature. You can literally hop on a float and just lay in the water for hours at a time. The water is so calm that you will not get tipped over by huge waves. It is so peaceful and relaxing.
Not only is the water picture perfect, but the sand feels like baby powder under your feet. Most people visiting Providenciales are going to stay in a hotel on Grace Bay Beach. The hotels on Grace Bay Beach in Turks and Caicos are all wonderful. Obviously, you are going to have luxury vs non luxury hotels. But, everyone is going to have one thing in common – Grace Bay Beach.
I highly suggest if you are planning a trip to Turks and Caicos that you stay in a resort in the Grace Bay area. After all, the beaches of Grace Bay are what Turks is known for. Also, do not forget to pack a float. If you are like me, you are going to want to spend hours floating.
Paddle Boarding + Kayaking
One thing that I have always loved about the resorts in Turks and Caicos is that most provide complimentary non-motorized water sports. When we were planning our very first trip to the island we loved the fact that nearly every resort we looked at offered complimentary paddle boards and kayaks.
My husband and I always take advantage of both. We have never had to wait on a paddle board or stop and come back to the shore because someone was waiting. I will say that my husband and I are always those people that paddle board multiple times daily while on the beach. People are usually respectful of others when using the complimentary paddle boards and kayaks.
Not only are the paddle boards and kayaks entertainment, but also people watching. We always like to people watch as new people hop on the paddle boards. For some reason it is funny every time someone falls. Some do not realize it is a little harder than it looks. But, paddle boarding in Turks and Caicos is easier than paddle boarding in Florida. The calm water makes it better.
My husband and I have had our share of falls. Having a nice big fall is always fun and funny.
So, when you are searching for a hotel in Grace Bay, pay attention to what they offer. Most hotels offer these things for free. But, I would double check, especially if it is something you like doing or want to try and it not cost you.
Snorkeling at Bights Reef
One of our favorite things about Turks and Caicos is getting to snorkel. Bight’s Reef is at Coral Gardens Resort and is of course – free. If going out on a half day snorkeling trip or a private boat is not in your budget, do not worry. You can still get a great snorkeling adventure for free.
Depending on where you stay, you may have to get a taxi. As far as snorkeling gear, many resorts provide this for free. Most resorts will just let you sign it out and take it with you to the reef. If for some reason this is not an option, you can rent your snorkel gear at Dive Provo for around $20.
In order to get the most out of snorkeling, I suggest you wake up early and go to Bight’s Reef. The early a.m. is when you will see the most. Then, have breakfast at Somewhere Café which is right in front of the reef.
A Day on Long Bay
We love going over to Long Bay for a day or an afternoon. It is a different kind of pretty vs Grace Bay. Long Bay has super shallow water which is pretty cool. I love just sitting in the water and chill-axin. The water does not even come up to my shoulders.
Long Bay is a great place to go and chill out. You can pack a cooler with some snacks and take a beach bag. When you get there, you can spread out under a palm tree, eat, and enjoy the view.
Another great thing about Long Bay is the kite boarders. The wind is normally up on this side of the island which is what kite boarders need. So, this is the place where you can sit and watch the kite boarders in action.
While at Long Bay, you can walk up and down the beach and find conch shells. I always come home with at least one conch shell. I like decorating with them at home in MS as they remind me of our happy place.
Island Fish Fry
The island fish fry is a great free activity for the evening. The island fish fry takes place on Thursday nights. At the fish fry you will find food, live music, and local vendors. The fish fry is free to get into. But, the food and crafts from local vendors are not free.
You will find pretty much anything to eat including fish and conch fritters. The vendors offer cool crafts that are made on the island.
If you want a table, I suggest getting there early. Otherwise, you will have to stand. The fish fry brings out a large crowd of people including locals and visitors. We just recently started going to fish fry. We are usually exhausted from the day so we do not stay long. But, we do like to go and walk around and listen to the local musicians and bands.
The Turks and Caicos fish fry is a great family event.
The Best Things in Life are Free
Obviously, it is not free to get to Turks and Caicos or to stay. But, some of the best activities on the island are free. The things to do in Turks and Caicos are unlimited. There are some great activities that are not free and that I highly suggest, but they are not a necessity to make your trip great. Instead, they are just added bonuses. I think you will have no problem at all finding great, free things to do in Turks and Caicos.
People always say the best things in life are free. I think that is true. Money doesn’t buy happiness. Experiences make you happier than materialistic things that only make you happy for a little while.
It is okay to want nice things, but at the end of the day it is good to know what is truly important. If I have to choose between a new item vs a vacation – I choose the vacation every time!
