Tacos with a Twist
One of our favorite “go to” meals is tacos. We like the tacos out of the box like most people. But we prefer to make our own using fresh ingredients and our own sauces.
Our tacos with a twist are easy to make and are delicious. This is a good meal that can be prepared in about 30 minutes. We enjoy eating these tacos with French fries and baked corn on the cob. The corn on the cob does take longer than 30 minutes. If you are planning to do that you will need to put it in the over at least an hour before you eat.
These particular tacos can be dressed any way you like. We like to use fresh ingredients that we get out of our garden. Each year we plant peppers. We always like to pickle our peppers and put them up so that we can have them specifically for these tacos. Although it is too early for tomatoes, you can still buy them at the grocery store. If we can’t get fresh tomatoes from the garden, we settle for the grape or cherry tomatoes from the grocery store. They have more flavor than the regular size tomatoes. Another great addition to these tacos is radishes. The ones shown in the pictures are fresh out of our garden. We love radishes. We keep them in the refrigerator year around for snacks.
Next, you can use hamburger meat or shrimp. We always have hamburger meat in the freezer so we tend to make those more. But, if we are planning ahead we will buy shrimp to use. Both are wonderful.
- 6 Soft Shell Tortillas
- 1lb of Hamburger Meat or Shrimp
- Pickled Purple Onions
- Pickled Bell Peppers
- Comeback Sauce
- Hoisin Sauce (optional)
First, you will need to season and brown your hamburger meat. We season our meat with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. If you have a favorite seasoning you can add that as well. You will brown your meat on medium heat until done. You will then drain your meat and set aside.
While your meat is cooking, you can dice your tomatoes and slice your radishes. We typically put all our toppings in a plate so that when the meat and tortillas are finished, we have everything right there to prepare our tacos.
I suggest making your Comeback Sauce before you start so that it is ready. You can buy Comeback sauce at the store but we prefer to make our own. Also, you can go ahead and dilute your Hoisin sauce before you start. You want the Hoisin to be almost runny. It is really strong. We only put a small amount of Hoisin to about ¼ cup of water and stir. The Hoisin is optional. I suggest trying it before you drizzle it over your tacos.
Once you have all of your toppings ready and your meat is done, you will brown your tortillas. You will spray a small pan with PAM and heat each tortilla. We like to heat ours until they are warm but also slightly browned.
We like to eat our tacos on wax paper. It is easy cleanup and you can easily place three tacos on each piece of wax paper.
We start by placing three tortilla shells on each piece of wax paper. You will then add your meat to eat taco. From there, you will add your toppings. Once your toppings are added, you will drizzle each taco with Hoisin Sauce and Sriracha. The Sriracha is spicy. If you do not like spicy, you may consider leaving this off or only adding a small amount. Lastly, you will add a spoonful of Comeback sauce.
We place our side items and everything right there on our wax paper. We use the Comeback sauce as a dipping sauce for our fries as well.
I hope you enjoy as much as we do! You can really play around with these tacos and add toppings that you prefer. Once you start making these you will no longer want the box tacos.
