Spicy Mexican Hamburgers
My husband and I travel and some of our favorite restaurants are in other states and other countries. Turks and Caicos have some amazing restaurants and we often get home and then crave certain dishes that we can’t have. So, we will come home and make our version of some of our favorite foods.
While in Turks and Caicos in May, we ate a Mexican style burger at Asu on the Beach at the Alexandra Resort. This burger was delicious. We have had one similar to this at a local restaurant that was probably equally as good.
So, while craving it one night, I went to the grocery store and bought my list of ingredients. I made my own version of this burger.
It is super easy to make and has a nice twist on your traditional type burger. This burger includes some of my favorite things including guacamole, chipotle mayo, onions, and cheese. I mean, who would not enjoy a burger like this. Anyway, if you are on a diet this is probably not a great choice. My husband and I do try to eat clean at least 75% of the time.
Typically, we eat clean for breakfast and lunch and then eat what we want within reason for dinner. This burger is one of those things that is probably not within reason. I could not finish mine because it is huge.
- Ground Sirloin
- Chipotle Mayo (Recipe Below)
- Guacamole (Recipe Below)
- Caramelized Onions (Recipe Below)
- Fresh Sliced Jalapenos
- 2 Slices of Pepper Jack Cheese
- Hamburger Buns
First off, I made my chili sauce so that it could sit in the refrigerator while I prepared my other items. I like to always make sauces ahead of time so that they can sit and the flavors can settle.
Chipotle Mayo Ingredients
- 2 Chilies from A Can of Chipotle Peppers in Adoba Sauce
- 1 Cup of Mayo
- Garlic Powder to Taste
- Pepper to Taste
You will take 2 chilies of out the can and smash them using a fork. You will want to get them in tiny little pieces so that you do not have large chunks of peppers. You will then add these peppers (along with a small amount of sauce from can) into your mayo. You will stir this up so that everything is combined.
Next, sprinkle some garlic powder and pepper to your mixture and stir. Set aside in refrigerator while you prepare your other items.
I made the guacamole next so that it could also sit a minute while the other items were cooking. Anytime I am cooking something that has sauces or dips, I prepare them before I start the other cooking. That way, when your meat is ready you are ready to prepare and eat.
- 2 Ripe Avocados
- One Small Purple Onion
- 2 Small Tomatoes
- Small Bunch of Cilantro
- Jalapeno (Optional)
- Juice of One Lime
- Sea Salt to Taste
- Garlic Powder to Taste
You will remove the pulp of the Avocado and smash. Add one squeeze of your lime. Next, you will add in your chopped purple onion, tomatoes, cilantro, and jalapeno if using. Next, you will sprinkle sea salt and garlic powder to taste and stir.
Guacamole is one of those things that I always add my ingredients to and then taste. I will then add more salt if needed or garlic powder if needed. This is the same for the onion, tomatoes, and cilantro. You can add more or less of these ingredients depending on your taste.
Now that your mayo and guacamole are finished, you can cook your burgers.
- 2 Ground Sirloin Patties (I buy them already made)
- Salt and Pepper
I love skilled fried hamburgers. So, on this recipe I just added salt and pepper to my meat and fried the burgers until done. Before taking up the burgers, I added a slice of pepper jack cheese and let it melt. This is extremely healthy I know. Oh well. Once the burgers were done, I then cooked my onions.
- 2 Onions Sliced (I like mine to be in rings)
- Olive Oil or Grape Seed Oil (I used grape seed oil)
Toss your onions in grape seed oil until coated. You will then cook them on med-low until they turn slightly brown and are tender.
It is now time to put your burgers together.
On a toasted hamburger bun, you will add a layer of guacamole to one side. We put sliced jalapenos on top of this. Next, add your burger patty. From there, you will add your caramelized onions and chipotle mayo. Add your other bun and you are ready to eat.
We ate these burgers with oven baked corn.
I hope you enjoy these as much as we do.
