Skincare During Pregnancy

May 20, 2019

I have been doing a poor job of updating the blog lately! With that being said, I told you guys that I would be going over my skincare during pregnancy. So, here it is…finally!

Anyone who follows me knows that I LOVE skincare products. There are a few skincare products that I cannot live without and will never change and then some that I am willing to change up.

Retinol During Pregnancy

As we all know…or most of us…Retinol is a NO NO during pregnancy. I will be the first one to say that it sucks because retinol is one of my main go to products. So, when I got pregnant, I started my search for retinol alternatives. The first retinol alternative I tried was Biossance Squalane + Photo-Retinol Serum. I think this product is pretty good, however, when I ran out I wanted to try something different.

So, the next product I started using was Ole Henriksen Glow Cycle Retin ALT Power Serum. I really love this product but I went through it SO quickly. Now, I am not one to go cheap when it comes to my skincare staples…like Retinol. However, I want to feel like I am getting a good return on my money. So…I started looking at other products.

The last product I bought…and the one I am currently using is the Ole Henriksen Goodnight Glow Retin ALT Sleeping Cream. I will say that this particular one has been my favorite so far. It seems to go a long way and is super moisturizing…which I need because I have pretty dry skin most of the time.

Exfoliating Pads

The next skincare product that I never venture from is the Dr. Dennis Gross peel pads. I cannot…or do not want to live without the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel Pads. When I got pregnant I of course did research to see if these were safe. According to the Dr. Dennis Gross blog and other searches…they are (THANK GOODNESS). These pads make your skin so soft and help your other products really sink in. They really are a game changer. I typically only use these once per week.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is so important to any skincare routine…even during pregnancy. Thankfully, vitamin C is safe to use. Vitamin C is a product that I ALWAYS use…but am willing to try different brands. I am currently using the Kiehl’s Powerful Strength Line Reducing Concentrate 12.5% Vitamin C. So far, I really like this product and it has lasted quite some time.

There are so many vitamin C creams out there to try. When looking…I always like to buy one that tells me how much vitamin C it has in it. I feel like some vitamin C serums has vitamin C as an ingredient…but not much of it is actually in the product.

Other Products

As far as my cleansers, eye serums, and moisturizers go…well…I venture out on these. I just recently ran out of my IS Clinical Cleansing Complex. So, I bought the CeraVe Hydrating Face Wash from Amazon to try and I LOVE it. I must say I do love IS Clinical products, however, I honestly like the CeraVe face wash just as much. It is gentle and hydrating, which I love.

I will also venture out on my eye serums. Currently, I am going back and forth between the Timeless Organics Eye Serum and the Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream. I honestly like both. I always put my retinol alternative around the outer part of my eyes and then pat my eye serum all the way underneath and around.

Moisturizers – I am currently using the Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion and I honestly love it. It is super lightweight but still very moisturizing and super affordable.

Protecting Skin During Pregnancy

Sunscreen should be worn EVERYDAY regardless…but especially during pregnancy. One major fear I had when I got pregnant was whether or not I would have brown spots pop up all over my face. I’ve struggled with melasma. So, I was afraid it would all pop back out during pregnancy.

Thankfully…I’ve been able to keep it under control with my skincare regimen. Sunscreen is something I am so diligent with. I honestly have sunscreen in my purse, my car…and I am never outside without a cap or hat on.

We just recently got back from our Babymoon/10 year anniversary trip in Kauai. While there, I wore a cap the whole time. I didn’t take my normal wide brim hat because I didn’t want to keep up with it during all the travel and I can’t pack it.

So, I will say…that while in Hawaii I got two brown spots above my cheeks (despite wearing sunscreen). I guess I didn’t think about the fact that with a cap that part of my face was exposed at times. However, I am just glad they popped out there instead of above my lip…which is the usual for me. Both spots have gotten someone lighter since I have gotten home and of course the retinol alternative, vitamin c, and peel pads are indeed helping.

My favorite everyday sunscreen is Elta MD Sunscreen and if I am going to be outside I wear ThinkSport Kids with Zinc or Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face sunscreen.

I’ve been extremely blessed to not have to worry with breakouts or any major skin issues during pregnancy. Acne has never been something I have had to deal with but I know so many that have to deal with hormonal acne during pregnancy.

The only issue I have had has been the dark spots that popped up during our trip. I do think my skincare during pregnancy helps and of course I try to eat a clean (most of the time) diet which also makes a difference.

Lastly, I know many will ask when to use these products. Here is what I do:

Morning Routine

  • Cleanser
  • Vitamin C
  • Eye Serum
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen

Nightly Routine

  • Cleanser
  • Retinol Alternative
  • Eye Serum
  • Moisturizer

Then, once per week I will do the peel pads. Also, if I have somewhere to go or before putting on makeup…I will do the Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Clay Mask. It makes your skin super soft and I love doing it before makeup.

I believe this is it! I hope this helps any moms to be that are looking for skincare during pregnancy! Also, check out my pregnancy must haves to see which items I use for stretch mark prevention!
