What to Expect
We just returned from Turks and Caicos this past week. Everything was amazing as always. When thinking about what new experience I was going to share, I thought about the airport. The airport is small and easy to navigate.
I always like to know beforehand what to expect when I am going to a new place. I even like to know what to expect at the airport. When I am flying and I know someone has been there, I always ask “is it easy to navigate through?” Depending on where I am going, I will even ask if there are decent food options. After all, if you have a long layout, it is nice to go sit down and grab a bite to eat.
There are many people who do not travel often. So, going in and out of airports can be stressful. I hear of some people who refuse to travel because they are nervous about the whole airport thing.
Flying into Providenciales (PLS)
The flight into PLS (Providenciales Airport) is beautiful. It is always great to book a window seat. I get excited about this each time. It never gets old.
Your plane usually lands a little out from the airport. From there, you will follow the crowd. You will walk down a stretch on the concrete until you reach the inside doors of the airport. Once you walk in, you will find restrooms on the left.
From here, you will get in line so that they can check your passport and customs form. Next, you will wait for your luggage. Once you have your luggage in hand, you are ready to get transportation to your hotel.
Transportation from the Airport
I suggest scheduling your transportation ahead of time. If you do this, someone will be waiting on you with your name on a sign. You will just find them, load your luggage, and off you will go. If you do not book ahead of time, you will more than likely end up in a taxi with other people.
Getting in a taxi with others is fine, except, you have to wait on each person to be dropped off at their hotel. We did this once and it took forever because we were the last hotel.
If you have a car rental, you will just go out the doors and follow the side walk up the hill straight ahead. From there, there will be someone waiting to get your paperwork for the car rental. Your car will be in that parking lot. We use Grace Bay Car Rentals and this was our process. It took maybe 10 minutes and we were off. Directions from the airport will depend on which hotel you are staying in.
You will be provided a map and the person helping with the car rental will also be happy to give you some directions.
Returning to the Airport after Your Trip
Once your trip is over, you will return back to the airport. After all, you have to get back home. This is always the worse part. When you are arriving you are excited and looking forward to your vacation. Traveling home is always no fun. For me, once my vacation is over, I am ready to like snap my fingers and get home. We are always exhausted by this point as well.
How Soon to Arrive at Airport
If you are arriving at the airport during a busy time, I would say to arrive at least 2 hours ahead of time. We typically travel in the slower season so we get to the airport about 1 ½ hours before time. This time, the airport was busy compared to normal for us. We were told that this is not even that busy compared to the high season. I cannot imagine it being much worse, but others say it definitely can be worse.
Last week, we flew out on Saturday. On that day, there were over 10 flights. This is what made the airport so busy. Saturday is also one of the busiest times to fly in or out of this airport. The other days are not as busy.
What is Next?
Once you arrive at the airport, you will need to check in if you have not already done so. From there, you will get in line. We flew American Airlines (also a first for us), so we got in the American Airlines line. Here they will weigh your checked luggage. You need this to be 50lbs or less. Ours was 49 even. Whew. If you go over it is expensive. Believe me, we have been there, done that. You will have already paid for your checked luggage during check in. You will just drop if off here and make sure it is tagged with your information.
Next, you will get in the security/customs lines. Here, you will have to take your shoes off and remove your watch or any bracelets. You will put all these things in a tray. You will also have to put cell phones and computers in a tray. These things, along with your carryon luggage will go through and get checked.
This airport seems to really rush you on this. I know they are trying to make things flow. Yet, I could not even get my shoes on and my things together before they were pushing me along. This always makes me nervous because I feel like I am leaving something behind. Anyway, we made it and it was fine. Being super rushed was my only complaint. I walked about with everything in my hand and my shoes untied.
Once you get past this point, you can go sit down and relax and wait for your plane. This airport has lower and upper level seating. There are a couple of stations where you can get snacks. There is a jewelry shop and also a liquor shop.
Upstairs there is a small type restaurant/bar. It is hotter upstairs because there is a balcony and the door is constantly opened. The seats are not as comfortable upstairs either. The chairs downstairs have cushions.
Sitting upstairs is cool because there are windows and you can watch the planes. If you have a while before your flight leaves, upstairs is good. Upstairs, you are out of the way of everyone down stairs trying to leave.
Time to Leave
Once it is time to leave, you will get in line. Again, you will follow the pathway on the concrete to your plane. Once everything is in place, you will go.
Leaving the airport is lovely to watch as well. But, it is not as exciting because you are leaving instead of coming. If you are anything like me, this means sleepy time. Once we are off, I snuggle in my covers and I am off to sleep until our layover or arrival.
I hope these tips help you know exactly what to expect in this airport. Happy flying!
