Protect your Skin this Summer
Today I wanted to talk about some tips on how to protect your skin this summer. Believe me, I have been that person that would sit out in the sun for hours upon hours and bake – face uncovered. In high school I would go to our country club pool and lay out with my friends pretty much daily and I’m pretty sure I never put on a drop of sunscreen.
I tanned easily and never really burnt except maybe once or twice at the beginning of the summer. But, back then, I didn’t realize all the damage I was doing. Because I tanned easily, I thought sunscreen was useless. I mean, back then, who wore sunscreen anyway..I hated putting that crap on.
Now, more than 10 years later, I wish that I had put that “crap” aka sunscreen on, worn a hat, and protected my skin from the sun. But, it is too late. I am fortunate enough that by the time I hit my early twenties I was super obsessed with skin care products. So, I think because of that, my skin could be much worse. Actually, I have pretty great skin minus one thing – the Melasma above my lip that will not go away no matter what I do. I have some Melasma on my cheeks but that just blends with my freckles. The Melasma above my lip is what really, really bothers me. I mean…it looks like a mustache (guess what it’s from sun damage).
My esthetician I saw a couple of years ago told me she could barely see it and my friends say the same. But, it is pretty much all I see when I look in the mirror. We all know how it is..no matter how many good things we have going on..sometimes it is hard to get away from that one bad thing. The Melasma above my lip is my one “bad thing.” I am trying to deal with it and pretend like I don’t see it.
So, because of my experience, I want to make sure everyone knows how important it is to protect yourself, especially your face, from the sun. If I am being honest I do not protect my body as much as I should. My focus is always on my face. I wear 30 SPF sunscreen on my body and that is pretty much it. At times I will use some oil to enhance my tan. I am an outdoor, pool, beach kind of girl so I am not going to avoid the sun unless I just have to. So, I am going to wear some sunscreen on my body and continue to be super overprotective of my face.
I wrote a post about sunscreen last year, but I think it is important enough that I feel the need to touch on it year after year.
Best Sunscreen for Face
I will say that when it comes to your face…not all sunscreens are created equal. You want to make sure that your facial sunscreen has AT LEAST 9% Zinc.
My favorite sunscreens for my face include:
- Thinksport Kids Safe Sunscreen SPF 50
- Elta MD UV Sport Broad Spectrum SPF 50
- Obagi Sun Shield Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF 50
If I am going to be hanging out at the beach or the pool for the day…or be outside in the yard for a long period of time, the Thinksport Kids sunscreen is what I am going to use. It has a whopping 20% of Zinc in it. I mean..if it is safe enough for kids, then it should be great for adults as well. It is white and when you first put it on your skin you are going to be white from sunscreen. But, once you rub it in well it is fine. I do not like anything thick and cakey and this sunscreen doesn’t bother me at all.
The Elta MD UV Sport and Obagi Sun Shield are great sunscreens to just wear on a daily basis, especially during the summer. The Elta MD has 9% Zinc and the Obagi has 4.7%. So, the Elta MD would be my next choice if I am going to be at the beach or outside for a long time. I am super particular as you probably have picked up on by now, so I would not wear the Obagi to the beach unless it was my last resort. I have the Obagi that I just keep in my purse. The Thinksport stays in the beach bag, and the Elta MD stays in the bathroom.
Both the Elta MD and the Obagi go on smoothly and again are not cakey or anything. They are not as thick as the Thinksport. If you do not suffer from Melasma, any of these three sunscreens would be great for you to use. But, since I already have darkness, I try my hardest to prevent any further darkening.
When I am wearing my daily facial sunscreen I just put it on under my makeup. Then, after work or if I am going walking or anything like that…I will just re-apply over my makeup. If I am at the beach for the day…I pretty much reapply my face sunscreen every hour.
Best Sunscreens for my Body
As I mentioned, I do not protect my body as much as I do my face. I hear lots of people say..I’m not wearing sunscreen on my body because I want to tan. Let me tell you, when I am at the beach or going to the pool..I use SPF 30 sunscreen lotion and put it all over my body in the place of my regular moisturizing lotion. Guess what, I still get dark…really dark.
I will use a tanning oil at times, but I typically just stick to straight sunscreen…especially at the beginning of the summer. When I do use tanning oil, I want something natural and good for your skin. I also like something that does have a little SPF in it. Also, I am not going to use the tanning oil all day..I say all day because when we head to the beach…we literally stay from like 9-5. I may start out with some sunscreen and end with oil or something like that.
When it comes to sunscreens for my body, I do not spend as much money.
Here are my favorites:
- Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30
- Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Oil Pump Spray SPF 15
- Sun Bum Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30
- Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Clear Mist Spray Sunscreen SPF 30
As you can tell, I love the Hawaiian Tropic products. I love how soft and smooth they are on my skin. THey also have a wonderful smell. I do not like most spray sunscreens, but I do like the Hawaiian Tropic Mist Spray Sunscreen. It is one of the only spray sunscreens that I have found that does not put a shimmer on your body and make you sticky. I swear that some of the spray sunscreens cause burns.
Like I said above…when I am heading to the beach for the day…I put lotion sunscreen all over my body. Then I use the spray sunscreen for my touch ups. Then, when we grab lunch or take a small break…I re-apply my lotion sunscreen. Remember, that you cannot put on sunscreen and then spend hours outside without reapplying. You will get burnt. Sunscreen has got to be reapplied.
The next thing I recommend for protecting your face is a hat. When you are outside for long periods of times or at the beach or pool..WEAR A HAT…and not just a simple little small fedora that doesn’t even shade your face. You need a hat that is going to provide some coverage on your face. I have a variety of wide brim fedoras as well as baseball caps that I wear. There are so many cute hats and caps out there. So, you do not have an excuse not to wear one and protect yourself.
Being outside = wearing sunscreen + hat
I hope that my tips to protect your skin this summer have helped you. There are many great products out there, but these are my favorites and continue to be my favorites year after year. You can protect your face without having to spend a fortune. Also, remember, sunscreen for your face lasts a long time so you really get your money’s worth.
To the young girls out there..do not follow in my footsteps and bake unprotected daily. You will regret it as you get older. Every woman wants smooth, silky soft skin. ..not brown, rough, leathery skin.
