Visiting Long Bay Beach
On that day, the beaches of Long Bay were abnormally calm compared to the Grace Bay area. Typically they are a bit wavy as this is where the kite boarders go. We were in the middle of hurricane Joaquin so everything was a bit backwards it seemed. Anyway, after that quick visit, we decided that we had to go back and spend a day there on our next trip.
How to get to Long Bay from the Grace Bay Area
From Grace Bay Area, you will head out toward Graceway Gourmet. At the roundabout, follow the signs toward Leeward Highway. You will reach Leeward Highway in less than a mile. Take the roundaboud and turn left. You will now drive for about a mile and you will turn at the sign that says The Shore Club. You will know you have reached the Long Bay public beach access when you come to The Shore Club on Long Bay Beach sign. On a post next to this sign, you will see a gate and a sign with an arrow that points to the beach. You will simply follow this path. This path is just a rocky, sandy path. In the distance you will be able to see the beautiful waters of Long Bay.
Once you reach the end, you will see a large sign that says “Welcome to Long Bay Beach.” This sign just gives information about the area and some recommendations for kite boarders.
Also at the end of the path, you will see a large post of different places listed. I love this little area of Long Bay Beach. The next time we visit we are going to somehow have to figure out how to get a Mississippi sign up there.
I just love how unique all these signs are. Next to this, you will find an area of picnic tables and then the beach.
The Beach at Long Bay
The beach at Long Bay is stunning. It is a different kind of pretty compared to Grace Bay. Grace Bay has those perfect turquoise waters like no other. The water here has more of a crystal blue look. Long Bay is more untouched I guess you could say. There is less development there and you basically have the beach to yourself.
As you look down the beach you will see scattered palm trees and everything just looks like a post card. The water at Long Bay is still crystal clear; just not as pretty of a color as the colors of Grace Bay in my opinion. The cool thing about Long Bay is that the water is so shallow. You can walk at for a really long way and the water never gets above your waist. I like to just sit in the shallow waters at Long Bay and just relax.
A Day at Long Bay
I would suggest that if you are visiting Turks and Caicos that you spend a day at Long Bay. I love watching the kite boarders do their thing and also the emptiness of the beach. It is pretty cool to basically have the beach to yourself.
If you do decide to go and have a car, you can pack your rental with the things that you need. If you are renting a taxi, you will want to be prepared for the day.
What to Take:
· Beach Chairs or Towels to Sit On
· A Cooler with Drinks
· Sunscreen and a Hat
If you are spending the day at Long Bay, you want to be prepared. You do not have to waste the day away going back and forth for things that you may need. You will want to either have beach chairs or towels to sit on. We always just take towels. Most people do not carry beach chairs with them to Turks and Caicos. We certainly do not want to buy them for a day and Long Bay and leave them. So, we use towels. It is good to have a couple so you can make yourself a pillow if needed.
We have an IceMule Cooler that we pack our drinks in. We have a beach bag that we carry a portable radio, sunscreen, and snacks in. You do not want to forget your sunscreen and a hat. It is really hot and has little shade. You will pretty much be in the beaming sun the entire time you are there. You want to be prepared. Getting sunburned is no fun.
Once you have all the things you need, you just have to worry about enjoying the day. We love just lying near a palm tree and relaxing.
Looking for Souvenirs
We are obsessed with conch shells as I love to give them as gifts and use them in bookcases and around my house. They remind me of the island so I love taking some home with me each time. Long Bay is a great place to search for old conch shells. If you walk up and down the beach, you can usually find dozens that are dug down into the sand.
Please use this option rather than taking live ones from a snorkeling excursions. If we keep removing them from the waters, eventually we may have none to take. With the conch shells, you get a true piece of Turks and Caicos to take home with you.
I feel like Long Bay is going to be filled with houses and condos before too many years. We love taking advantage of the peacefulness that it currently brings. It is really a great place to go and get away from the crowds and enjoy time together. If you are interested in staying there instead of Grace Bay, you do have options as there are some areas to rent.
The Shore Club was under construction the past two times we have visited and should be opening soon. There are also villas that you can rent, depending on your budget.
