For the past couple of months, I see the words Hello Fresh everywhere on the internet. I have seen tons of ads for Hello Fresh as well as tons of celebrities endorsing this service. So, after months of speculation and even hearing some people locally talk about it, I decided to give it a try. Now that I have tried it, I want to share with you my Hello Fresh review.
I received a $30 coupon code from a friend, so I decided now would be a great time to give it a try. I went online and signed up. Upon signing up, I freaked out a little bit because I signed up but did not get to choose my meals. But, I then realized that after you sign up you can go back in and choose which meals you want and can even edit the date of when you get them.
So, after signing up, I did just that. I went in and chose for my first delivery to be on April 5th. When April 5th came around, my package was at my door. I will admit I was still a little skeptical about having “fresh” food delivered to my door.
My husband and I opened the box and it really proved to be legit. There were actually fresh veggies in the box as well as chicken, beef, and pork. The meat arrived cold, not frozen. There was a large ice pack in the bottom of the package where the meat laid. Everything in the box was cold as it should have been. I will admit that I was pretty impressed after opening the box.
Meal Prep | Cooking
We got our first delivery around 5pm in the afternoon. So, we decided to get started. We chose to cook the sizzling beef stir fry for our first meal. In the box was a fresh red bell pepper, bok choy, ginger, a red onion, and garlic. In addition to the fresh veggies and meat, you get seasonings and in this case jasmine rice. The only items you need to keep on hand are things like salt, pepper, butter, and oil.
We love to cook at our house and consider ourselves pretty good cooks. So, we were very excited about trying something new. The food prep time was literally like 10 minutes (just as they said). Within 30 minutes were eating our meal.
The second night we decided to cook the moo shu pork tacos and on the third night we cooked the chicken gone nuts. Just like the first meal, meal prep was 10 minutes or less and within 30 minutes we were sitting down to eat.
Each of our meals were anywhere from 560-630 calories. With the ingredients, you get note cards that show what it is inside your box as well as the recipe with instructions. Everything is clearly laid out for you with easy to follow instructions.
Are the Meals Good?
The sizzling beef stir fry was my favorite and my husband’s favorite of all three meals. The pork tacos were good, but nothing over the top. The same thing goes for the chicken and veggies. Even though the sizzling beef stir fry was my favorite, it was still pretty average. As I mentioned, we cook a lot and we cook pretty tasty meals and try lots of new things. So, with that being said, this for us was pretty average, simple meals. They are perfect for someone who doesn’t really know how to cook. I think also you need to be willing to go outside of your comfort zone in food. You are not going to get a meat, veggie, and bread.
My mom and dad visited one night while we were cooking and my mom was like “oh we need to try that.” However, they are very traditional eaters if you know what I mean and so I let her know up front she would probably not like the food. I mean like, if they cannot get a baked potato or fries and a salad with their steak they freak out. So, if you are a picky eater I would say this is not for you.
I think what we liked most about Hello Fresh was the convenience. Although we love to cook, it is nice being able to just open a box a couple of nights a week and have everything you need right there. Anyone who cooks knows that cooking a good meal is pretty time consuming. So, for us, being able to sit down and eat 30 minutes after opening the box made us pretty happy.
Would I want to replace all my meals with Hello Fresh? Heck no! I love to cook and so does my husband. We actually enjoy being in the kitchen (especially our new kitchen) and trying new recipes. So, for us, services like Hello Fresh are just good to mix things up.
Hello Fresh is great for those who cannot cook or for someone like me who is just wanted to mix things up. If you sign up, you can use the code DAWNCOCK to get a discount off of your meal. If you decide to try it, let me know how it goes. I would love to hear everyone’s experiences with Hello Fresh.
Oh and, I almost forgot the most important thing – HOW MUCH DOES IT COST…for my first meal, I did the classic meal – 3 meals for 2 people – and paid $30 (this included a $30 coupon code). So, without the code it would have been $60.
Next, I am going to move on to Home Chef and Blue Apron. I will let you know how those go!
