Destin, Florida 2018
Christopher and I just returned this past weekend from our Destin, Florida 2018 beach vacation. Both of us grew up going to Destin each year for our family vacation. My family went to Gulf Shores, Alabama until I was about twelve and that is when we moved on to Destin…which is way better in my opinion.
I love Destin because it is a quick and easy getaway for us. We can drive to Destin in under six hours. The beaches in Destin are about as good as you can get in the states. They are no match for Turks and Caicos, but nice and clean. We had a couple of days of very pretty water as well.
Activities in Destin, Florida
When we go to Destin for vacation, we pretty much just lay on the beach because…well…laying on the beach is just our thing. We go down by 9 am, go back up and grab a quick lunch, and then back down we got until about 4:30 pm. We even nap on the beach. I mean…beach naps are the best!
For those that like to shop, you have Silver Sands Outlet Mall, Destin Commons, and Grand Boulevard at Sandestin. The older I get, the less I like to shop in stores. I would so much rather order online than have to fight crowds. However, while there, I did go to the Lululemon shop down on 30a and the new Tribe Kelly Surf Post.
Lululemon is pricey, but gosh they have the best feeling leggings. Christopher decided to try on some clothing while we were in there and guess what…he fell in love to and bought him some work pants. He agrees they are COMFY. Tribe Kelley Surf Post had some cute items and so I came out with one of the cutest and most comfy outfits I own.
Dining in Destin, Florida
There are TONS of places to eat in Destin, Florida. We got into Destin late our first night so we decided to try Whale’s Tail. Of all the years we have been going to Destin we have never tried this restaurant. Well…we have not been missing anything. Our food was just not good. I think if you are only interested in having drinks you are fine. If you are looking for a good meal…this is not the place.
We love to drive down to 30a for dinner because they have some great options. One of our favorite places to eat is Old Florida Fish House. Someone told my brother about this place several years back and so we have been going ever since. It never disappoints. You can get sushi, live music, and a great menu with some AWESOME fish. You may even spot a good ole country singer while there.
Another place we enjoy is Bud and Alley’s. I love their chicken tacos as well as their chips and salsa and guacamole. Keep in mind that you each of their restaurants are separate. They have pizza, tacos, and a nicer sit down restaurant. You have to order off the menu of each place. For example, you cannot order tacos from the pizza area.
The parking down on 30a however is quite the challenge. So, if you are going during a busy time, you will need some patience because it may take a while to find a space to park.
Breakfast in Destin, Florida
Christopher loves a good breakfast. I am more of a smoothie girl, but I go because that is what he likes. My favorite breakfast spot in Destin is Camille’s. They have great smoothies and great breakfast tacos. Oh, and I love their fresh juices.
For a sit down restaurant, we always enjoy Another Broken Egg. It is a chain (and we like to stay away from chains) but it is good. PS – do not order the sausage…eww.
Sunset Bay Cafe in Sandestin is another breakfast option. This year was our first time to ever try it. It was just okay…nothing special. We actually like Another Broken Egg better. They have this cinnamon roll on the menu that is supposed to be really great. However, we found it to be super dry. I like super moist ooey…goey cinnamon rolls. Christopher’s family recommended it to us but we were pretty disappointed.
We never went out one time at lunch. Instead, we just ate fresh tomato sandwiches and our homemade salsa for lunch. We do not like to take up our beach time by fighting crowds at lunch.
4th of July in Destin, Florida
We were in Destin for the 4th. So, because the 4th of July is nuts in Destin, we all chose to cook at the condo. We had lots of groups of people with us so each family made a dish and we just hung out by the grills and cooked and ate. Then, after dinner, we went down to the beach and enjoyed the fireworks.
I cannot imagine what the restaurants would be like on the night of the 4th. There are so many people in Destin during this time. We actually prefer to go on a non holiday but the 4th of July is when our families have always gone.
Mainsail in Destin, Florida
We were in Destin with Christopher’s family so we stayed at Mainsail as this is where they always stay. We rent our rooms through VRBO. Mainsail is an older, but clean resort. It is pretty large and you are beach front but the walk is not what I would consider short. It is easy, but not short. Mainsail has a great little pool area for kids and a large area of grills.
Christopher had to play in a golf tournament last Saturday (the same day we were leaving). Therefore, we were up at 3:30 am in order to have plenty of time to drive home so that he could be at the country club by noon to play. I am pretty sure I am still catching up from my lack of sleep and catching up on my to do lists.
If you have never been to Destin I do recommend it. Destin is a great family place with a little bit of everything to do. Our Destin, Florida 2018 trip was full of fun and laughs with our family and friends.
