The Magical Experience
It is hard to put into words how great it is being out on the water in Turks and Caicos. No matter which trip you choose. You will have the time of your life while enjoying scenery that is so perfect it seems fake.
My husband and I chose the half day adventure in September 2015. We started the trip off at Blue Haven Marina. We took a taxi to the resort and that is where we boarded the boat. Strolling through the marina and looking at the turquoise waters and nice boats is lots of fun. We highly suggest getting to the marina early so you can walk around and enjoy the wonderful scenery.
When it was time to board, Captain Mat greeted us with a smile and a cold drink. He is super friendly and we felt like we were his friends immediately. Stepping onto that boat puts you into a state of complete relaxation. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be boarding a catamaran in Turks and Caicos?
Captain Mat went over the boat rules and safety guidelines first. After that, we all took a seat and the boat started moving. The feeling of being on a catamaran in Turks and Caicos is surreal. What a blessing it is to be there, on that boat, enjoying the beautiful water that God made.
World Famous Barrier Reef
Our first stop was at the world famous barrier reef. Captain Mat assisted us with our snorkel gear and in the water we jumped. Once you jump in, time stands still. At that moment nothing else matters. You look around and see beautiful marine life, vibrant coral, and fish of all colors. Being underwater is magical. It is like adult Disney World for us. We could stay in that one spot for hours upon hours and enjoy all the peacefulness the ocean has to offer.
Shipwrecked Boat Fun
After snorkeling, we decided to get on the boat and venture off to the “shipwreck.” As we pulled up, we saw this big cargo ship that was stuck. It was a beautiful rusted ship named La Familia.
Hanging off the side of the ship was netting. When we saw that ladder net, one thing popped in our minds – jump. Jump we did! We immediately jumped into the water and swam up to the side of the ship and started climbing. The climb was pretty easy, but, you do need some upper body strength to to make it to the top and climb over.
One of our friends needed an extra push at the top. We always get a good laugh out of this because we have a picture capturing that moment perfectly. That moment of him sprawled out on the side reaching for help to the top.
Once aboard, we carefully explored. The old ship was beautifully rusted. We seized the opportunity to explore because we were told it may not be there that much longer. When finished exploring, we jumped into the crystal clear waters below. The water around this ship is quite shallow at only 10ft or so. The jump to below was amazing.
Captain Mat had watermelon slices waiting for us. We got back on the boat and enjoyed the watermelon and more drinks. From there we cruised on to Iguana Island.
Iguana Island is a tiny little island. You can see many iguanas just by walking along the wooden pathways. You will notice that the iguanas have tags for research which we think is pretty cool. It is really hot here and we suggest wearing shoes. Walking through the paths and exploring only takes about thirty minutes or so. It is a neat place to see but we do not suggest wasting lots of time at this stop.
Half Moon Bay
During our trip we also visited Half Moon Bay. It is a beautiful island just off of Providenciales. Half Moon Bay has an amazing backdrop that includes low cliffs and deep turquoise water. This is a secluded beach and is pretty relaxing. There are no restrooms but there are picnic tables and a couple of hammocks.
A Sunset Like No Other
At the end of our trip Captain Mat provided us with a snack platter. It included bread, brie cheese, pickles, carrots, and Mexican hummus dip. It was beautifully presented and perfect after a long day on the water.
As our day ended, we ate our snacks, finished our last drink, and enjoyed a sunset like no other. A trip with Caicos Catalyst and Captain Mat is a trip of a lifetime. Booking one of his trips should be a priority while in Turks and Caicos.

We had an amazing time with Captain Mat. Captain Mat grew up in Turks and Caicos and knows the islands better than anyone. Mat is a PADI Open Water scuba diving instructor and has completed the local STCW (standards of training certification and watch keeping). He of course holds a TCI Captains license. Oh, and did we mention he is great at kite boarding?
